Review of the cartoon "Paranorman, or how to train a zombie";

Little Norman is endowed with a rare gift. He sees and hears ghosts. First of all, his dead grandmother. Naturally, no one believes him, and therefore the boy has no friends. Even his family thinks that Norman is not right at home. However, when his hometown is attacked by a witch who was executed by the locals several centuries ago, Norman turns out to be the only one who can negotiate with the dead who have risen from their graves and calm the raging witch.
I would call "ParaNorman" a great tragicomic cartoon, if not for two circumstances. First of all, I don't like his graphic style. I understand and appreciate the love of Western animators for cartoon characters, but in "ParaNorman" the proportions of some characters are so distorted that I cannot look at them without shuddering. The mother and the elder sister of the title character suffered the most. Their dolls look as if the creators of the painting took out their anger on them for years of bullying. And this is very strange, because Sandra and Corti were clearly conceived as outwardly attractive heroines.
The second problem of "ParaNorman" is a terrifyingly creepy scene in which the hero tries to snatch a magic book from his dead uncle's numb hands. If this episode had been included in a feature film, "ParaNorman" would have immediately received an "adult" rating. But even in a puppet cartoon, such a "macabre" is shocking. It's one thing for zombies who died centuries ago and who don't look much like real people. Another thing is a "fresh" corpse, and even a person close to the protagonist. In my opinion, such humor is unacceptable in a children's picture. Because if you don't teach a child to respect death, you can raise a teenager who will "play pranks" in cemeteries and rob graves.
Nevertheless, even with these two important caveats, "ParaNorman" is a wonderful puppet show that elegantly plays around with horror cliches, builds an exciting narrative with several plot surprises, and finds humor in the same places where Peter Jackson's "Scarecrows" and similar comedy horror films used to find it. However, the film still falls short of "Coraline in the Land of Nightmares", the previous creation of the American studio Laika. But it's stronger than "Corpse Bride," Laikov's debut. Especially in the climactic scenes of Norman's "battle" with the witch, which are both scary and touching.
So it remains to be regretted that Chris Butler, who made his directorial and screenwriting debut, did not have the taste and common sense to correct the flaws of "ParaNorman" and turn a worthy production into a genre masterpiece. However, lumps of the first pancake are common. But where the experienced Sam Fell was looking ("Get Out," "The Adventures of Despereaux") is a mystery to me. Because his previous paintings didn't have the same problems that "ParaNorman" had. However, the scenario material was completely different there.
