New Minimum Wages in 6 Provinces

The new minimum wage will take effect on October 1st, 2023, in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.

Quebec and British Columbia this year raised their respective minimum wages on 1 May and 1 June, respectively, after the Federal Minimum Wage increased to $16.65 on April 1.

  • A business may not legally recruit any employees for less than the minimum wage, which is the lowest salary rate established by Canadian provinces.
  • Paying less than the minimum standard wage is prohibited and applies to all employees, regardless of age or number of hours worked.

Ontario New Minimum Wages

  • On 1st October, Ontario will implement a new minimum wage of $16.55 per hour. From $15.50 an hour, this represents an increase of $1.05.
  • The Ontario government estimates that this hike will result in a salary boost of more than $2,200 annually for those obtaining the minimum wage and putting in 40 hours per week.

Manitoba New Minimum Wages

  • On October 1st, Manitoba will implement a new minimum wage of $15.30 per hour.
  • There is $1.15 rise above the current $14.15 hourly minimum wage.

Nova Scotia New Minimum Wages

  • On October 1, 2023, Nova Scotia will also raise the nominal wage for the second time, to $15 an hour. A $1.40 elevate has been made to the minimum wage.
  • Previously, the minimum wage was raised from $13.60 per hour to $14.50 per hour on April 1, 2023.
Saskatchewan New Minimum Wages
  • On October 1st, Saskatchewan will raise the province’s minimum wage by one dollar, from $13 to $14 per hour.
  • The minimum wage in Saskatchewan was last increased on October 1, 2022, when it was raised from $11.81 to $13.00 per hour.
Newfound land and Labrador
  • The average wage is also rising in Newfoundland and Labrador for the second time this year.
  • Starting on October 1, the new minimum wage will be $15 per hour.
Prince Edward Island New Minimum Wages
  • On October 1, 2023, the standard wage of Prince Edward Island (PEI) will increase by 50 cents to $15 per hour.
  • Prior to this, PEI raised the minimum wage by 80 cents to $14.50 per hour from $13.70 per hour on January 1, 2023.
