A new open work permit that allows H1B visa holders in the United States to work for any employer in Canada will become accessible, On July 16, 2023.
For one year, or until the cap of 10,000 principal applicants is met, this new open work visa program will accept applications. Additionally, this open work visa will be valid for up to 3 years and permit family members to join the principal applicants.
These 10,000 H1-B visa holders’ spouses, children, and other relatives may apply for temporary resident visas, work permits, or study permits.
On June 27, 2023, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced this program as a means of attracting top talent to Canada.
While H1-B visas also cover jobs outside the tech sector, it is expected that IRCC will take into account the 24 STEM jobs that have already been shortlisted or create a new tech list when deciding whether to accept applications for this new open work permit program.
The IRCC will release more information on this new program before July 16, 2023.
